Colony
House sits at the top of Washington Square.
Until 1900 it was the principal seat of government, first for the
Colony of Rhode Island, then for the State.
One of many historic 17th and 18th century buildings, such as the
Quaker meeting house, the Wanton-Lyman Hazard House and the White Horse
Tavern, it is a grand reminder of Newport's colonial past.
