The gala June engagement party of Imogen Revel in the ballroom of Mon Plaisir, her family's Newport, Rhode Island mansion is tragically interrupted by the death of her fiancé Hugh Dockings after drinking from a glass of poisoned burgundy. Caroline, who had been standing next to Hugh when he collapsed, becomes the chief witness whom Hank must question when he arrives at Mon Plaisir. But, their relationship, which began so promisingly in the first book in this series Murder Stalks A Mansion, now appears rocky. Caroline and her mother-in-law Louise still operate The Inn at Kenwood Court, the Kent family mansion which has been turned into a hotel catering to wealthy visitors to Newport. And although Reed, Caroline's late husband, has been dead for more than two years, the young widow still finds it hard to accept his passing.
Once again, the case is complicated, the suspects are numerous, the clues often baffling. Putting aside their personal feelings, Caroline and Hank team up to solve the crime. But before this murder is explained Caroline faces deadly danger from an unexpected adversary. Can Hank come to her rescue in time?
